So, what do you know about the Khmelnytsky Uprising? Likewise in Ukraine the uprising had major long lasting implications, such as the Pereyaslav Agreement whereby the Cossacks pledged loyalty to the Tsar of Muscovy in exchange for military assistance. In Poland this episode is generally seen as a major turning point, marking the end of the Polish Golden Age and the start of a troubled period called The Deluge. When hostilities ended Polish authority over the Cossacks had evaporated. While the success of the uprising flowed and ebbed in the end it was clear that the tide was in favor of the Cossacks. By forging an alliance of the Crimean Tatars and enlisting the aid of unhappy peasants, the Cossacks shocked the Commonwealth with their rapid success. The causes of the uprising were varied, ranging from displeasure about the status of the Cossacks, grievances of Ukrainian nobles and peasants, but also broader themes such as the tension between the Orthodox local population and the Catholic central authorities. The Khmelnytsky Uprising was a major uprising by the Zaporozhian Cossacks against the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth that started in 1648.
